What have the Australia Points System modifications been?
Recent Changes in Australia’s General Skilled Migration Visas Points System (Effective from 16th November 2019)
The Australia General Skilled Migration Visas Points System has undergone significant revisions as of 16th November 2019. Below is a concise overview of the key changes implemented within this system:
1. Specialist Education Qualification:
Candidates holding a Research/Master’s Degree or Doctorate Degree from an Australian educational institution are now eligible for an increased 10 points, up from the previous 5 points.
2. Partner Skills:
Candidates with a spouse under 45 years old can now receive additional points for their spouse’s skills, as follows:
a) Spouse Skill & Language Assessment:
If the candidate’s spouse possesses proficient language skills and receives a positive skills assessment for their occupation, an elevated 10 points can be obtained, previously set at 5 points.
b) Spouse Language Ability:
Candidates whose de facto partner or spouse demonstrates competent language skills are eligible for an extra 5 points.
c) Spouse Adaptability: This factor has undergone a twofold point revision:
- Single applicants now receive 10 additional points, an advantage not previously granted.
- If the de facto partner or spouse holds Australian Citizenship or a PR Visa, an additional 10 points can be claimed. Previously, no points were attributed to spouses with Australian Citizenship or PR.
d) State Sponsorship / Nomination:
Applicants receiving a nomination by an Australian State or Territory or securing sponsorship from a family member can now enjoy an increased 15 points, up from the previous 10 points. This updated 15-point criterion applies exclusively to the Subclass 190 and 491 Visas.
These revisions enhance the points-based system, providing candidates with more opportunities to accumulate points through various qualifications and partnerships, ultimately increasing their eligibility for Australia’s General Skilled Migration Visas.

Age:
If you are between the ages of 32 and 25, you can earn a maximum of 30 points.

English language proficiency:
If you receive 8 out of a possible 20 on the IELTS test for English language proficiency, you can. However, Australian immigration officials allow applicants to take an English proficiency test, including IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, etc. Any of these tests can be used to try to get the necessary bands.
Work history:
You will lose 15 points if you have 10 to 8 years of skilled work experience that was gained outside of Australia and is counted backward from the date that you applied for a PR visa. The points awarded decrease as the number of years decreases.

Education:
Your point total for the education component will be determined by your educational background. A doctorate from an Australian or international university that has been approved by the Australian government is worth the most points.
