Family Sponsorship Program
As a nation dedicated to family reunification and maintaining relationships between loved ones, Canada provides many immigration programs that enable citizens to sponsor their relatives’ admission to the country through the Family Sponsorship Program.
What is the Family Sponsorship Program
For citizens or permanent residents who desire to bring their families to Canada, the nation offers sponsorship programs. Under these programs, some family members may be given permanent residence in Canada.
Because Canada understands that family should never be put on wait, one of the most popular immigration streams allows citizens and permanent residents to easily sponsor their spouses and immediate family members to immigrate to Canada with shorter processing timelines.
Who can come to Canada as a sponsor?
1. Spouse, Common-law, or Conjugal Partner
You may be able to sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for Canadian permanent residency, regardless of whether they are in Canada on a valid temporary visa or living overseas. Couples who are currently living in Canada could be qualified for an open work visa. Which would relieve some of their financial obligations.
While their sponsorship application is being handled, sponsored persons can work in Canada with the help of a spouse’s open work visa. Because Canada recognizes common-law unions. If you and your partner are not married but have been living together for at least a year, you may be able to apply for spousal sponsorship.
2. Parent or Grandparent Sponsorship
Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents are also included in Canada’s commitment to family reunion through the parent and grandparent sponsorship program. To sponsor a parent or grandparent, citizens, and permanent residents must demonstrate that they can financially support their family by bringing in at least the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) necessary for their family size.
They must also consent to provide financial support, if necessary, for the sponsored family members. A Super Visa is a long-term, multiple-entry visa for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Sponsors who are unable to provide their parent or grandparent with long-term assistance may be eligible.
3. Child or Other Dependant Sponsorship
Your children can be listed on your application for permanent residency as accompanying dependents if you’re moving to Canada. If you decide not to include them or are otherwise unable to do so, they could still be allowed to come to Canada and live with you later.
Under the country’s child sponsorship program, unmarried individuals without children of their own are eligible to sponsor their biological or adoptive children under the age of 22 for permanent residency. A kid who is older than 22 and has a physical or mental impairment that makes it impossible for them to sustain themselves may be regarded as a dependent.
4. Orphaned brother, sister, nephew, etc.
Depending on the situation, Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents may be able to sponsor an orphaned sibling, niece, nephew, or grandchild’s immigration to Canada. To qualify as your sponsor, they must be unmarried, younger than 18, and related to you biologically or by adoption.
5. Other relatives (under circumstances as a “Lonely Canadian”)
Rarely, Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents may be permitted to sponsor one distant relative’s immigration to Canada. Sponsors must be categorized as “Lonely Canadians” to sponsor a relative. Mainly those who do not fit the present criteria of the “Family Class” in Canada. As a result, the sponsor is not someone’s husband, common-law partner, parent, grandparent, child, or grandchild.
Eligibility to sponsor a family member
You must fulfill minimal qualifying standards to sponsor a family member. Eligible sponsors must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Be at least 18 years old live in Canada or intend to return after your spouse or partner
- Become a permanent resident of Canada
- Be able and willing to meet your family member’s basic financial requirements for three years
People ineligible to sponsor under the Family Sponsorship Program
A citizen or permanent resident may occasionally be disqualified to sponsor If any of the following circumstances apply, a sponsor may be ineligible:
- Having failed to make alimony or child support payments
- Have filed bankruptcy and are still being held
- Received social security payments other than for a disability
- Defaulted on a loan for immigration, or paid bills late or not at all
- Had previously sponsored another relative and failed to satisfy the sponsorship agreement’s criteria
- Depending on the facts of the case, have been convicted of a violent crime, an offense against a relative, or a sexual offense.
- Is incarcerated
Sponsorship fees for a family member
You must make a $150 payment for each kid listed on the application. if you are sponsoring your spouse and they have dependent children or if you are supporting your adopted child. A further $1,050 is needed if you’re incorporating your relative’s spouse or partner. The following is a list of the government processing costs for sponsoring a relative in Canada:
- Sponsorship charge – $75
- Processing cost for the primary applicant – $490
- Price for the right to permanent residency – $515
- Biometrics – $85
- Total: $1135
A fee of CAD 289 must be paid in addition to the foregoing fees if the sponsor intends to dwell in Quebec after obtaining permanent residency.
Costs are subject to change after some time. In case of a discrepancy, please click here to checkfor any revision by Goverment for updated costs.
Income Requirement for Canadian Family Sponsorship
If you want to sponsor your parents, grandparents, eligible orphaned relatives, or someone who qualifies under the “Lonely Canadian” policy, you may need to meet minimum income requirements.
These sponsors must have the appropriate Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for the size of their family unit and produce Canada Revenue Agency-issued Notices of Assessment (NOA) as proof that they have fulfilled the minimum MNI for at least three consecutive years.
There is no minimum income requirement to sponsor a spouse, in contrast to the majority of other kinds of Canadian sponsorship. However, anytime you sponsor a family member to come to Canada, you must sign an undertaking promising to provide financial assistance for your sponsored family member’s necessities.
This agreement is required for all sponsorship applications and recognizes a sponsor’s promise to return social assistance payments received by the sponsor and their family member(s) over 20 years. If the sponsor resides in Quebec, an additional commitment must be executed.
The duration of the project is determined by the type of support. The duration of the undertaking for spousal sponsorship (including spouses and common-law or conjugal partners) is three years from the day the sponsored individual becomes a Canadian permanent resident.
As long as the sponsored parent’s dependent child does not have any children of their own. Canadian citizens or permanent residents are free from having to fulfill the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI). If the sponsored dependent child has dependent children, the sponsor is still required to meet the MNI requirements for the size of the family.
How long does sponsorship take
Applications for sponsorship take around a year to process from beginning to end. They are normally handled within 12 months, but depending on the nature of your case, it may take longer. Your application may be delayed if you have a challenging case. Or the immigration officer seeks extra documentation of your relationship.
The easiest method to ensure that your sponsorship application is handled as fast as possible is to do it correctly the first time.
